High Stakes Poker-
Season 6, Episode 13

In one of the most
exciting episodes and in one of the most thrilling seasons, Season 6 of
High Stakes Poker finished with Episode 13. Consisting of a cast of
some of the best poker players out there, Daniel Negreanu, Tom
"durrrr" Dwan,
Doyle
Brunson,
Bertrand
"ElkY" Grospellier,
Eli Elezra, David Benyamine, Lex
"RaSZi" Veldhuis
and Phil
"OMGClayAiken" Galfond were all going for the
jugular. The question remains, who made it out not bleeding??
Lex "RaSZi" Veldhuis
was back after losing more than $100,000 earlier this season, replacing
Mike Matusow and his first move was convincing the table to raise the
blinds to $500-$1000 with a $300 ante and a $2000 straddle. This was
just the beginning of an action packed show, where every hand aired had
something unusual as the players were fighting for their share of the
pot.
The first hand
didn't go quite as Dwan imagined it would. Veldhuis opened things up,
raising to $4000 with A 9 , Negreanu called with K 10 in the small blind, as did
Dwan in the big blind with 9 5 . The flop came 3-7-7 and
Negreanu checked but Dwan bet $10,700 and Veldhuis quickly folded. But
Negreanu went with the call and hit the K
on the turn. He then checked again and Dwan checked behind. The Q
came on the river and Negreanu bet $28,800 with his pair of kings. Dwan
decided to call with 9 high, after deciding that Daniel had missed his
straight draw.
He then had to shake his head abd said, "I guess my call is terrible
then, if you
can float that, I made one of them hero calls."
Brunson took the
next pot after a huge overbet. Velduis straddled for the $2000,
Benyamine called with 7 6 , Galfond raised to $10,500
with K,J and Dwan also called with Q 10 . Dunson re-raised to
$55,500 with AK and everyone folded.
Galfond was next on
the straddle and Veldhuis raised to $8200 having a 7-6 and Galfond
called with Q-10. Flop came A 8 3 . Galfond did a check raise,
after Veldhuis bet $13,300 and Galfond re-raised him then to $39,000
and Veldhuis folded.
Veldhuis didn't take
a breather before the next hand, he raised to $7500 with 10-9.
Benyamine called with 5 2
and Elezra with a pocket pair of 3's did as well. The flop showed a
rainbow with 7-4-7. Elezra checked, Veldhuis made a conti-bet of
$14,500 and Benyamine was out but Elezra called. The turn came 9
and Veldhuis had made top pair, and both players checked. On the river came A ,
Elezra checked, Veldhuis bet $37,000 and Elezra had to pay up.
In the next hand,
Benyamine raised to $4200 with pocket tens and Galfond then raised to
$16,000 with K,5. Elezra re-raised to $40,500 with pocket kings.
Benyamine folded but Galfond called. The flop came K-9-9. Elezra bet
$33,000 and Galfond called. The 9 came on the turn and both
checked. The Q came on the river and
Elezra went in with a $110,000 bet, Galfond finally decided to make the
right call and folded his full house. "Pocket queens?" Galfond
asked. "He's the most bluffable person in poker," Dwan joked about
Galfond's
laydowns. "I just don't like to call with full houses. I like, like one
pair or ace-high," Galfond responded.
Veldhuis straddled
for $2k and Brunson called as big blind with Q 7 .
Veldhuis raised to $11,000 with 9 2 . Brunson replied "Just a
little gift for you, son." and called "Thank you, sir," replied
Veldhuis. The flop brought 6 3 2 and both checked.
On the turn Brunson
bet $20,500 and Veldhuis called after J
came. The river came 4 and Brunson tried to steal
the $65,000 in the middle with a $60,000 bet. Veldhuis called with his
pair of twos and told Kara Scott afterwards, it was the biggest call
he'd ever made in a cash game, but "I'd rather look like a fool and go
with my gut and learn from it than chicken out and fold," he said.
On the next hand,
Galfond went for the straddle. Benyamine called with 10 6 and Grospellier saw action
for the first time and called with J 5 . The flop came A-3-Q and
Galfond with 3-2 bet $3500. Grospellier called and Benyamine decided it
wasn't for him and folded. On the turn came 2
and Galfond bet $9200 after making his second pair. Grospellier went
ahead and then raised to $27,500 which Galfond called. The river showed 2 and Grospellier checked and
then folded to Galfond's bet of $34,200.
Next on the straddle
was Negreanu. Elezra raised to $7200 with Q Q Dwan with 9 7 , Benyamine (K-J), Galfond
(9-8) and Negreanu (J 10 ) all called. Flop came 3-7-9
rainbow and Dwan hit two pair and re-raised Elezra's bet of $23,300 to
$71,000. Benyamine,
Galfond and Negreanu all made the right decision and folded, but Elezra
re-raised to $173,000 and Dwan went all-in for $426,300! This gave
Elezra pause, with $638,500 in the pot but finally folding and going
from over $400,000 up to only $250,000 up and Dwan was now up for the
episode.
Dwan had the next
straddle and Grospellier raised to $7000 with A 6 . Dwan discovered that he
had pocked aces black and re-raised to $20,800 after asking how much
Grospellier was playing, who called. The flop came, 8 6 4 and Dwan bet $26,400 and
Grospellier called. The turn was Q
and Dwan went all-in and Grospellier called, although as he was
counting his chips, he said, "It's probably bad" and it was.
Grospellier wanted to run it once and after the 5
came, Dwan had won a $255,300 pot. Another Doyleism was born as
he commented to Dwan, “You’re like a vacuum
cleaner.”
In the second to
last hand of the season, Galfond straddled and Negreanu raised to
$8,000 with K 5 . Veldhuis called
with 9 7 ,
and so did Galfond with 8-7. Negreanu got top pair on the flop
of K-8-3 and he bet $26,000 and Galfond called. Galfond got trips on
the turn of 8 and he checked
and Negreanu did too. Negreanu got his trips on the
river of K .
Galfond checked and after Negreanu bet $25,000, Galfond
announced, "I have a full house again" and folded once more.
In the last hand of
Season 6, Elezra straddled, Galfond raised to $8,000 with 10-2,
Negreanu called with Q 10 and so did Elezra with J 10 . Flop came Q-4-J having two
diamonds. Galfond bet $14,000, Negreanu called, and Elezra folded. The
turn brought a 8 ,
the second club on the table. Negreanu bet $30,000 after Galfond
checked, who then re-raised to $94,000. Negreanu, on a big
draw went all-in and Galfond folded, saying,“I was trying to
impress Doyle.” *by playing the 10-2, known as the Brunson,
because of
the two Main Event WSOP championships Doyle won with that hand*
Thus we have to wait
again until next season for the action to continue.................
