Poker Etiquette - What is
expected from you at the Poker Table
After
learning the poker rules, it is time to learn the rules of how to act
at the poker table. Being a good sport and knowing how to behave at a
live poker game is part of being a good poker player. Having good
manners is what makes a comfortable, relaxed atmosphere where even the
beginner can feel the good vibes. And if the beginner feels good and
stays for a long time at the table, it can lead to a most
profitable evening. That's is also the origin of the poker saying
"Don't piss in the aquarium, it spooks the fish".
Don't forget if
you act like a fool, no matter who you are playing with, you may be
jeopardizing your chance to be invited to the next round.
General rules that should be followed:
-If
you are not playing the hand, be quiet. If you for example give
information about your folded cards or even give your opinion about the
cards on the board, it can change the hand being played.
-Never critize your opponent or his game. If someone is
playing bad, it is good for your game.
-Don't try to correct mistakes of your opponents. See above.
-Don't make fun of an opponent, from whom you have just won a big hand.
-Don't
speak at the table in another language, unless everyone else at the
table can understand it. Speaking in a foreign language can get you
kicked from the table.
-Exaggerated emotions don't
belong on the table. If you are happy/upset, show it to your inside or
take a small break to let it out at a more appropriate (outside) area.
-Always
stack your chips in a way, that everyone at the table can estimate how
big your stack is. That means, the chips with the highest value, belong
in the first row and should be arranged going up.
-Pay attention to the blinds and put them down without being asked when
it is your turn.
-Take
the time you need to decide but don't take advantage of this. If you
need 5 minutes to decide to fold every time you are up and use this
time to hold lectures, you will only be pissing off your
opponents.
-Only play when it is your turn. This
is especially important for folding. All other actions that are made
out of turn are binding and may not be a wise choice for you.
-If
you are all-in, then you should show your cards- both of them- to the
whole table. To hide one or to take a card from the table is a NoGo.
-If you are in a casino, it is common practice to tip the dealer after
winning a pot.
-Show
one - Show all. If you show a player at the table, one or both of your
cards, you must show them to all. This is also true if you show them to
someone just watching the game or to n audience.
-Don't
place String Bets. One action. Don't say something like "I will call
your 50" pause and then "and raise you 100". Just say 150 from the very
beginning in one action.
-Don't Slow Roll, if you have the best hand, then just show it, don't
make a big show out of it.
-Try and make all of your comments positive. Negative comments can ruin
the good atmosphere.
Don't make any comments about your opponents playing
styles. Keep this information to yourself and use it!
When
you know and follow these poker etiquette rules, you will influence the
playing experience for all there and as a good sport you will be a
welcomed guest at every poker table.
